About chardham

The Chardham Yatra etymologically refers to the ‘Four Sacred Abodes.’ It is a revered pilgrimage circuit in Uttarakhand and is one of the most important spiritual journeys in Hinduism. It comprises four holy sites—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—dedicated respectively to Goddess Yamuna, Goddess Ganga, Lord Shiva, and Lord Vishnu. According to mythology and tradition, undertaking this journey cleanses one’s soul and paves the path to salvation (moksha). The pilgrimage traditionally begins from Yamunotri, followed by Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath.

The temperature across the Chardham circuit varies from approximately 0 to 25 degrees Celsius depending on altitude and season. The best time to undertake the yatra is from May to June and September to October. Pilgrims are advised to avoid visiting during winters (November to March) as heavy snowfall leads to the closure of all four temples. Monsoon months (July to August) are also considered risky due to frequent landslides and road blockages in the Himalayan region, making travel difficult and sometimes unsafe.

If you are undertaking the Chardham Yatra, each destination offers unique spiritual and natural attractions. At Yamunotri, devotees visit Surya Kund and Divya Shila before entering the temple. Gangotri is known for the sacred origin of the Ganga River and the trek to Gaumukh Glacier. Kedarnath is surrounded by majestic peaks and includes nearby sites like Bhairavnath Temple and Vasuki Tal, which attract both pilgrims and trekkers. Badrinath, situated along the Alaknanda River, features important places like Tapt Kund, Mana Village, and Charan Paduka. Each dham holds immense religious importance and showcases breathtaking Himalayan landscapes.

You must have heard of the Advaita philosophy propounded by Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have revived and established the significance of these sacred shrines. The Chardham Yatra also includes several historical and mythological sites along the route, including sacred river confluences (prayags) and ancient temples. The entire region is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, dense forests, and pristine rivers, making it not only a spiritual journey but also a deeply enriching cultural and natural experience. Do keep in mind that the Chardham region remains cold for most of the year, so carrying warm clothes and proper travel essentials is highly recommended.
